Your uploaded files are processed and combined into a working data set. The output from the processing script and summaries of the data set are shown in this section. It is worth checking this log to make sure the processing went OK.

In particular, you will want to ensure that the team_id and player_id values are consistent across different data files. The team_id and player_id values are used to uniquely identify each team and player, and so if a player has different identifiers in different files, the app will think that these are different players.

Data processing log

The output from the processing script is shown below. It is worth checking this log to make sure the processing went OK.

Teams summary

The list of team names and team_id values. If a team appears more than once, it likely has different team_id values in different files.

Matches summary

A summary of the matches in this data set. This might help find duplicate or missing matches.

Players summary

The list of player names and player_id values. If a player appears more than once, they likely have different player_id values in different files.

Details

The scoring system used by Athletes Unlimited is described here and in more detail in this pdf.

Most of the actions that are counted are self-explanatory: serve aces, attack kills, and serve, pass, attack, and set errors. The perhaps-less obvious ones are:

  • A pass (serve reception) is counted if it is a perfect or positive pass
  • A set assist is a set that leads to an attack kill
  • Digs are counted on opposition attacks and block cover, if scouted, but not freeball passes. All dig grades except dig errors and digs directly back over the net are counted
  • Only block kills are counted

The default weightings assigned to each action (e.g. 12 points for a serve ace) have to some degree been tailored for international-level play (see the pdf for details). However, you can change these weightings if you feel that different values would be more appropriate for your level of play.

The output gives a breakdown by player of points for each type of action, along with:

  • Points: each player's total points scored
  • Points per set: each player's total points divided by the number of sets they played
  • Adjusted points: each player's total points but adjusted for a standardized match length of 3 sets.
adjusted points = (points per set) * 3 * nmatches * (playing time)
where nmatches is the average number of matches played by each team, and
playing time = (number of sets played by the player) / (number of sets played by their team)
